Black Cohosh was used by Native Americans to treat symptoms of
malaise, kidney problems, malaria and and sore throat. It was also used for
basic colds, cough, constipation and to induce lactation.
In the 1800s, Black Cohosh was used as a home remedy for fevers, and
to bring on menstruation. Alternative medicine practitioners prescribed Black
Cohosh for rheumatism, respiratory conditions, and for various problems
affecting women’s reproductive organs (menstrual problems, inflammation of the
uterus or ovaries, infertility and threatened miscarriage, relief of labor
pains.)
Black Cohosh has more recently been used to treat hot flashes during
menopause, vaginal dryness, and night sweats. Black cohosh has also been used
for gynecological disorders, menstrual irregularities, premenstrual syndrome,
and to induce labor. <o:p></o:p>
